Sun avoidance is BEST for the first 7 days to protect your new baby skin from dark spots and sun damage. So plan on skipping the lake day and tennis matches for the first week after your treatment.

1. SPF is your BFF

Look for sunscreens with a high percentage of zinc oxide, which provide excellent protection and are gentle on post-treatment skin without the white cast. Our CULT favorite is the ISDIN Eryfotono Actinica.  After any skin treatment, your skin becomes more sensitive to UV radiation. Applying a broad-spectrum sunscreen with at least SPF 30 is non-negotiable. Ensure you reapply every two hours, or more often if you’re swimming or sweating.

If you are prone to hormonal pigmentation you may want to step it up a notch and add a sun patch that protects against 98% of sun rays on top of your SPF.

Reference: The American Academy of Dermatology recommends using a broad-spectrum, water-resistant sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher.

2. Grab a wide brimmed visor and Seek Shade!

Shade is also a good friend to have! The sun’s rays are strongest between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. Try to schedule outdoor activities in the early morning or late afternoon. If you NEED to be outside, stay in the shade as much as possible.

A wide-brimmed visor like the BlueStone SunSheild is our go to for preventing damage from the summer sun and heat.

Reference: The Skin Cancer Foundation advises seeking shade between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. to minimize UV exposure.

3. Three supplements for preventing sun damage

Give yourself a headstart this summer and protect your skin from within.

You just spent a pretty penny on your skin treatments so lets make it count.

Polypodium leucotomos extract is a natural supplement derived from a tropical fern. Studies have shown that it can help protect the skin from UV damage by increasing the skin’s resistance to sunburn and reducing the risk of sun-induced skin changes. Consider adding this supplement to your daily routine, especially during the summer months.

Reference: Research published in the Journal of Clinical and Aesthetic Dermatology suggests that Polypodium leucotomos extract can provide photoprotection and help prevent UV-induced skin damage.

Astaxanthin is a powerful antioxidant found in algae and seafood like salmon. It has been shown to help protect the skin from UV damage and reduce the effects of photoaging. Taking astaxanthin supplements can enhance your skin’s natural defenses against the sun.

Reference: A study in the Journal of Clinical Biochemistry and Nutrition highlights the protective effects of astaxanthin against UV-induced skin damage and its potential benefits in reducing signs of aging.

Getting these two powerful antioxidants in one supplement couldn’t get any tastier than with Sunnies Gummies! These yummy treats were developed by Dallas-based dermatologist Dr Jennifer Cather. Take 2 every day rain or shine to protect your glowing skin from UV rays.

Omega-3 fatty acids, found in fish oil and flaxseed oil, have anti-inflammatory properties that can help protect your skin from sun damage. These healthy fats can reduce the skin’s sensitivity to UV rays and support overall skin health. Consider incorporating omega-3 supplements into your diet to enhance your skin’s resilience to sun exposure. The amount of EPA to DHA matters! Our current favorite brand is Nordic Naturals.

4. Be Gentle with Your Skin

After treatments like peels or laser therapy, your skin needs to heal. Avoid exfoliating or using harsh skincare products that can irritate your skin further. Stick to gentle, hydrating cleansers and moisturizers. If you have any specific post-treatment products recommended by your provider such as tyrosinase inhibitors to prevent dark spots, be sure to use them as directed.

If you are prone to breaking out after skin treatments we are obsessed with this gentle BPO cleanser that will reduce inflammation and kill acne causing bacteria without disrupting your skin barrier. It is generally fine to use 24 hours post treatment but be sure to check with your provider.

Reference: According to the American Society for Dermatologic Surgery, it’s crucial to follow your dermatologist’s post-care instructions to aid healing and avoid complications.

5. Hydrate, Hydrate, Hydrate

Keeping your skin hydrated is vital, especially after treatments that can leave it feeling dry or sensitive. Drink plenty of water and use a good quality moisturizer to help maintain your skin’s barrier function. Hydrated skin heals better and looks more radiant.

Reference: The Mayo Clinic emphasizes the importance of hydration for maintaining healthy skin.

Let your skin win.

Summer is a wonderful time to enjoy the outdoors, but it’s crucial to protect your skin, especially after undergoing skin treatments to truly get the most out of your investment. By following these sun safety habits, you can help ensure that your skin remains healthy, radiant, and free from damage.
