How Often Should I Receive Microneedling Treatments?

Are you looking for a minimally invasive way to improve the appearance of wrinkles, acne scars, or other blemishes? Say no more. Microneedling is an increasingly popular skin rejuvenation treatment that offers long-lasting results with minimal downtime.

Also called collagen-induction therapy (CID), microneedling works via a small handheld device by creating tiny, controlled micro-trauma to the skin, stimulating the body’s natural healing processes and boosting collagen and elastin.

Who is Microneedling For?

The amazing thing about microneedling is that it’s suitable for a variety of skin concerns, including scarring, hyperpigmentation, melasma, acne, UV damage, and overall skin rejuvenation. It can also be used in multiple locations, including the face, neck, and chest.

You’ll see visible improvements in texture, tone, and overall skin health about one week after your initial treatment session; however, a series of microneedling treatments is typically required for the best, longest-lasting results.

So, how often should you come back into the office for microneedling? It all depends on your goals, concerns, and the condition of your skin. Read on to learn more.

How Does Microneedling Work?

During a microneedling treatment, we operate a special handheld pen that uses tiny, thin microneedles to pierce the top layer of your skin in a precise, controlled pattern. These micro-injuries kick-start your body’s natural healing process, stimulating collagen and elastin production in the treated area.

In addition to microneedling alone, platelet-rich fibrin (PRF), a potent healing substance that we extract from your blood during a quick blood draw, can be used in tandem to help improve results and extend the longevity of the treatment. As we infuse the PRF into your skin, it helps nourish and rejuvenate new skin cells and supports healing post-treatment.

Topical numbing cream is typically used before microneedling treatments to ensure the most comfortable experience. Your provider will also select the appropriate needle length for your skin type and concerns. Afterward, there may be slight redness and swelling, which should disappear within 24 hours – but ultimately, you’re likely to have seen an improvement in your skin texture already!

Benefits of Microneedling Treatment

The benefits of microneedling are numerous, including:

  • Reduction of the appearance of scars, including acne scars
  • Reduction of acne
  • Improvement in the appearance of hyperpigmentation and/or melasma
  • More rejuvenated, youthful-looking and feeling skin
  • Alleviates the appearance of UV-ray damage
  • Can also help with hyperhidrosis and hair loss

Plus, microneedling offers long-lasting results and requires minimal healing time compared to other more invasive treatments – meaning you can return to your regular routine shortly after each session!

How Often Should I Get Microneedling Treatment?

In terms of how many treatments are necessary, it all depends on your individual skin type and desired outcome. Typically, patients require approximately 3-4 treatment sessions spaced 4-6 weeks apart to achieve the best results.

After the first series of treatments is complete, your provider will help you maintain your results with skincare that’s appropriate for your skin type. Annual microneedling maintenance is usually recommended, so chat with your provider about when they’d like to see you next.

Microneedling Aftercare

When it comes to microneedling, aftercare is an essential part of the process, as following instructions correctly can ensure maximum results and help extend the longevity of your treatment.

Here are some key tips to keep in mind:

  • Apply a hydrating serum or moisturizer after each treatment (see below to shop my recommendations) to help soothe, hydrate, and protect your skin from environmental damage. Avoid harsh cleansers and exfoliants, as these can be too abrasive on newly treated skin.
  • Wear sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher when outdoors, even on cloudy days, to protect your skin from post-procedure UV damage. Make sure you apply your SPF generously and reapply often throughout the day if you plan to spend time outside.
  • Avoid activities that make you sweat heavily, such as hot yoga, long runs, or sauna sessions at least one week after treatment to prevent irritation or breakouts.

By following these simple tips, you can ensure that your microneedling treatments are successful and that your results last longer!

How long after microneedling should I wait before wearing makeup?

Wait at least 48-72 hours before you apply makeup post-microneedling. That’s because the tiny microchannels created by the needles, while small, are still open wounds in your skin, making the area more prone to infection or irritation.

It’s best to plan your microneedling treatment during a time when you’ll be able to go makeup-free for at least a couple of days.

What to put on skin after microneedling?

For post-microneedling skin care, it’s best to choose products that are hydrating and soothing. It’s also important to remember your SPF! Here are a few of my favorite post-treatment picks:
