When it comes to anti-aging treatments, you have probably heard of Botox injectables. If you have looked into it, you have most likely come across Dysport, as it is a very similar injectable that is quickly gaining popularity. If you’re considering getting Botox or Dysport, you’re not alone – millions of people receive injections of botulinum toxin each year to smooth out wrinkles. But how do you know which one is right for you? Are they the same thing? What makes them different? In this post, we’ll break down everything you need to know about these two treatments.
Are Botox and Dysport the same thing?
Botox and Dysport are both injectable neuromodulators that are used to temporarily improve the appearance of wrinkles. Both products work by relaxing the muscles that cause wrinkles, resulting in a smoother, more youthful appearance. Botox and Dysport are so similar because both formulations are made from similar forms of botulinum toxin. The treatment process is the exact same, so it is very easy to get the two mixed up. Essentially, both brands are derived from the same toxin and used for the exact same thing.Â
What are the differences between Botox and Dysport?
While Botox and Dysport are both injectable treatments for wrinkles, there are some minor differences between the two. Botox is made from botulinum toxin type A, while Dysport is made from botulinum toxin type B. Basically, this just means that the two brands differ on one protein in the injectable.Â
One of the main differences is the size of the molecules. Botox consists of larger molecules, while Dysport is made up of smaller molecules. Due to it’s smaller molecules, Dysport can spread out more easily over the injection site. This can be beneficial when treating larger muscles. Overall, Botox tends to last longer than Dysport; however, some patients find that Dysport begins working sooner. Every patient is different and reacts to proteins differently. It’s important to see a licensed provider who can prescribe the treatment option that is best for you.Â
So, which should I get, Botox or Dysport?
One reason I might suggest Dysport over Botox to a patient is if they are on a quick timeline. Dysport takes effect more quickly than Botox, with results typically appearing within five to seven days, whereas Botox can take at least seven to fourteen days to start to kick in. While I never suggest a patient wait until the last minute to get injectables for a specific event, sometimes life happens and in this case I would recommend Dysport.Â
Ultimately, the best injectable treatment for wrinkles will depend on your unique needs and preferences. Both Botox and Dysport are FDA approved, safe and effective ways to achieve smoother skin. Botox has been around longer, therefore, is more widely available. However, Dysport is gaining popularity. Both brands are proven to have very minimal side effects. The most common side effect for Botox and Dysport is temporary bruising at the injection site.Â
It can be confusing to differentiate between Botox and Dysport and will be even more confusing as other neurotoxins enter the American market. I hope this post helped you gain more knowledge of both injectable brands. In short, Dysport and Botox are both used to relax the muscles in the face. The main difference is that Dysport spreads out more than Botox so it can take effect faster. In the end, choosing between brands should be a decision you make with your provider.
