Summertime is all about fun in the sun! It’s a time when we all want to look and feel our best, including our skin; It can be tempting to get caught up in the summer fun and forget that sun damage can occur quickly and have long-lasting effects on our skin’s health. Here are some tips and products to help you achieve gorgeous summer skin so you can be stress-free about this season.
Increase Water Intake
While most of us are aware that we need to drink more water during the hotter months, many of us don’t understand the reasons why. Drinking adequate amounts of water helps to keep our skin hydrated and looking its best. When your skin is properly hydrated, it’s better able to protect against the harmful effects of the sun. Also, our skin has an important role in regulating our body temperature and eliminating waste through sweating. However, your skin cannot effectively perform its tasks if not properly hydrated. During the summer months, the heat and humidity can cause dehydration to set in more quickly, so be intentional about consistently drinking water even before you get thirsty. Your skin will thank you!
Use a Topical Vitamin C
Vitamin C is one of the most important nutrients for our skin. It helps to protect against damage from UV rays, pollution, and other environmental stressors. During the summer months, our skin is exposed to more sun and pollution, which can take a toll on its appearance. To combat this, be diligent about using a vitamin C serum in your morning skincare routine.
My vitamin C suggestion:
- Revision C+ Complex (a powerful formula with an advanced form of vitamin C, along with other antioxidants and anti-aging ingredients)
Be Diligent with Daily SPF
It’s no secret that sunscreen is important, but during the summer months, it becomes even more essential. The sun’s ultraviolet rays are at their strongest during the summer, making it easier to get sunburned. Even if you don’t burn easily, overexposure to UV rays can damage your skin and increase your risk of skin cancer. Fortunately, we are able to protect ourselves against this with the discipline of applying a daily SPF. Just make sure you are choosing an SPF of 30 or higher!
My SPF suggestions:
- EltaMD Clear – best for acne-prone or sensitive skin
- ISDIN SPF mineral brush – keep it in your purse for on-the-go protection!
Double Cleanse at Night
In the summer heat, sweat and SPF can clog your pores and leave your skin primed for breaking out. That is why it’s important to double cleanse your face at night during the summer months. Start with micellar water, like our ISDIN Micellar Solution, to gently remove makeup and impurities. Then, follow up with your favorite cleanser to remove any remaining dirt or debris. This two-step process will help to keep your pores clear and free from breakouts all summer long. After all, healthy skin is glowing skin!
My cleanser suggestions:
- Papaya Enzyme Cleanser – gently exfoliates while cleansing
- Gentle Foaming Cleanser – best for sensitive skin
Keep Pigment Under Control With Melatonik Serum
One of the most visible signs of sun damage is the appearance of brown spots. These sunspots are caused by a build-up of melanin, the pigment that gives our skin its color. Melanin is produced by cells to help protect our skin from damage by the sun’s UV rays. However, over time, an accumulation of melanin can occur in certain areas as a result of sun damage, hormones, or simply aging. Fortunately, we are able to keep the pigment of our skin under control with certain products and practices. My ride-or-die product in my night skin routine during the summer months is Melatonik serum by ISDIN. It’s a lightweight serum that nourishes the skin and keeps pigment under control with its 3 powerful ingredients – melatonin, bakuchiol, and vitamin C.
Walk Outdoors Before 9 am or After 4 pm
Walking is a great form of exercise, especially outdoors, while getting some fresh air. However, if you are looking to avoid harmful UV rays in the summer, you should aim to walk either before 9am or after 4pm. These are the times when the sun is at its lowest in the sky, and the UV index is at its weakest. Walking during these times means you’ll encounter less damaging UV exposure and you’ll also be able to enjoy cooler temperatures. So next time you’re planning a walk, check the time and head out either early in the morning or later in the afternoon.
By following these tips, you can have beautiful summer skin while avoiding sun damage that leads to wrinkles and other signs of aging. Be sure to drink plenty of water, apply sunscreen every morning, and use good skincare products to cleanse and nourish your skin.
